The smells of my childhood ... going to my Grandmother's and my Aunt's ... are
colliding with my grown up life.
We have a ham and a turkey baking to bring to my family tomorrow on Easter. As I walked through the living room I caught the aroma of ham and turkey and deliciousness. But as I pass by the dining room table, Easter flowers wend their scented tendrils together with those reaching out from the kitchen.
In these scent-packed rooms, I suddenly realized that I'm actually sitting down in the living room and READING! No....not studiously working to understand the deeper meaning of a theological text in my office. But READING with interest and wonder ... in front of a fire... A dream to regularly be and do .... one I've had for a lifetime.
My grandfather and uncles were (and are) wise men. And I would often see them reading...or see books next to their living room chairs. I know them to have been and to be thoughtful, courageous, and compassionate people for the sake of the world. I do believe reading opened up part of that in them.
And that's who I've always wanted to be. Finally, after more than a decade, I've put off the pressure of "have to" in order to discover myself again. (even if only for this brief time.) Holy Cow. ...or more like holy and gracious God...Thank You!
